Insurance companies' capital investments at a new record high

During the third quarter of 2025, the market value of insurance and occupational pension companies' investment assets increased to SEK 8,198 billion, from SEK 7,862 billion at the end of the previous quarter. Compared to the third quarter of 2024, the market value has increased by 5 percent from SEK 7,808 billion.
─ The capital investments continued to increase from the previous all-time-high at the half-year change, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier, economist at Statistics Sweden.

The quarter in brief
- In the third quarter of 2025, insurance and occupational pension companies' holdings in shares and participations increased from SEK 5,689 billion to SEK 5,908 billion, equivalent to an increase of 3.9 percent. The previous peak was 5,763 billion at the turn of the last year.
Life insurance and occupational pension companies
- Increase in foreign shares: Foreign shares increased from SEK 896 billion at the end of the second quarter to SEK 951 billion.
─ This meant a new peak as it was higher than the previous peak of 924 billion at the turn of the year, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
Non-life insurance companies
- Increase in shares: Shares and participations increased from SEK 400 billion to SEK 406 billion, still somewhat lower than 408 billion at the turn of the year.
Premiums and claims paid from non-life insurance companies
- Decrease in business claims paid: Claims paid in the class business and houseowners insurance decreased to SEK 6.4 billion during the first nine months of 2025, from SEK 7.0 billion in the corresponding period 2024. At the same time the premiums for these insurances have been almost stable around 11.8 billion.
─ Payouts have fallen back and the development in premiums have been relatively calm after both during the full year 2024 rose at the fastest pace since 2019, says Malcolm Svensson Rothmaier.
