Increased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of June, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 556 billion, up by SEK 74 billion from May.

– The increase is primarily due to increased borrowing in debt securities denominated in foreign currencies, with monetary financial institutions accounting for the largest increase, says Beri Tekes, economist at Statistics Sweden.

Developments in June 2025 in brief

Increased liabilities in both bonds and money market instruments

  • At the end of June, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 556 billion, of which bonds accounted for 80 percent and money market instruments accounted for 20 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities increased in both bonds and money market instruments by SEK 57 billion and SEK 18 billion respectively.
  • The liabilities denominated in Swedish Crowns decreased by a total of SEK 71 billion while it increased by SEK 146 billion in liabilities denominated in foreign currencies.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was -0.9 percent in June, an increase by 2.2 percentage points from May.

Increased borrowing by monetary financial institutions and the government

  • In June, monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase in debt securities, and increased their liabilities by SEK 55 billion.
  • Also the government (through Swedish National Debt Office) increased their liabilities by SEK 43 billion. Sveriges Riksbank, on the other hand, decreased their liabilities by SEK 52 billion.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 1 795 billion will reach maturity within six months, excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. 68 percent of these are denominated in foreign currency.
  • Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for 69 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), of which the majority is issued in foreign currency.

Green debt securities

  • Green debt securities amounted to SEK 956 billion in June, up by SEK 5 billion from June.
  • Non-financial corporations accounted for the largest increase in green debt securities during the month, with an increase of SEK 7 billion.
  • Monetary financial institutions are still the largest issuer of green debt securites, in total SEK 430 billion. However, local government issue the largest share of green debt securities in relation to their total outstanding amount (37 percent).
