Increased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of October, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 311 billion, up by SEK 37 billion from September.
– The increase is primarily due to increased borrowing in bonds denominated in Swedish Crowns, with monetary financial institutions and the government accounting for the largest increase, says Hanna Helgesson, economist at Statistics Sweden.
Developments in October 2025 in brief
Increased liabilities in bonds and decreased in money market instruments
- At the end of October, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 311 billion, of which bonds accounted for 80 percent and money market instruments accounted for 20 percent.
- During the month, liabilities increased in bonds by SEK 58 billion and decreased in money market instruments by SEK 21 billion.
- The liabilities denominated in Swedish Crowns increased by a total of SEK 57 billion, while it decreased in liabilities denominated in foreign currencies by SEK 21 billion.
- The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was -8 percent in October, a decrease by 1.9 percentage points from September.
Increased borrowing by monetary fincial institutions and the government in October
- In October, monetary financial institutions and the government (through Swedish National Debt Office) accounted for the largest increase in debt securities, and increased their liabilities by SEK 49 and SEK 57 billion respectively.
- Non financial corporations and Sveriges Riksbank decreased their liabilities by SEK 29 and SEK 45 billion during the month.

Maturity structure
- Debt securities valued at SEK 1 475 billion will reach maturity within six months, excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. 60 percent of these are denominated in foreign currency.
- Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for 65 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), of which the majority is issued in foreign currency.

Green debt securities
- Green debt securities amounted to SEK 993 billion in October, up by SEK 11 billion from September.
- Monetary financial institutions accounted for almost the whole increase during the month.
- Monetary financial institutions are still the largest issuer of green debt securites, in total SEK 460 billion. However, local government issue the largest share of green debt securities in relation to their total outstanding amount (37 percent).
