Decreased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of May, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 480 billion, down by SEK 64 billion from April.
– The decrease is primarily due to net maturity in securities denominated in Swedish Crowns, with Sveriges riksbank and the government accounting for the largest decrease, says Rasmus Löfström, economist at Statistics Sweden.
Developments in May 2025 in brief
Decreased liabilities in bonds and increase liabilities in money market instruments
- At the end of May, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 480 billion, of which bonds accounted for 80 percent and money market instruments accounted for 20 percent.
- During the month, liabilities decreased in bonds by SEK 99 billion and increased in money market instruments by SEK 35 billion respectively.
- The liabilities denominated in Swedish Crowns decreased by a total of SEK 142 billion while it increased by SEK 78 billion in liabilities denominated in foreign currencies.
- The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was -3,1 percent in May, an increase by 0.5 percentage points from April.
Decreased borrowing by Sveriges Riksbank and the Government
- In May, Sveriges riksbank accounted for the largest decrease in debt securities, and decreased their liabilities by SEK 70 billion.
- Also the government (through Swedish National Debt Office) decreased their liabilities by SEK 31 billion, while the non-financial sector and monetary financial institutions increased their liabilities by SEK 16 and SEK 23 billion respective.

Maturity structure
- Debt securities valued at SEK 1 713 billion will reach maturity within six months, excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. 67 percent of these are denominated in foreign currency.
- Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for 69 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), of which the majority is issued in foreign currency.

Green debt securities
- Green debt securities amounted to SEK 949 billion in May, up by SEK 16 billion from April.
- Monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase in green debt securities during the month, with an increase of SEK 9 billion.
- Monetary financial institutions are still the largest issuer of green debt securites, in total SEK 430 However, local government issue the largest share of green debt securities in relation to their total outstanding amount (37 percent).
