Rent increase lowest in eight years

Rents rose an average of 1.3 percent from 2013 to 2014. This is the lowest increase since 2007. A three-room apartment now costs an average of SEK 6 385 per month. Rents vary among greater municipal areas and smaller municipalities.
The rent increase has fluctuated from 1.3 percent to 3.3 percent during the last 8 years. The increase has been diminishing each year since 2012.

The rent increase was in general much lower during the late 1990s and 2000s than during the 1970s, 80s and early 90s (at current prices). The largest increase occurred between 1990 and 1992 as a result of tax and subsidy changes. In 1991 alone rents increased by almost 30 percent.
At current prices, the rent per square metre has become 16 times higher between 1969 and 2014. The general price level has become nearly eight times higher during this time. At constant prices, rents have basically doubled during this period of time.
No considerable difference in rent increase among regions
The average rent increase was highest at1.5 percent in municipalities with more than 75 000 inhabitants (excluding Greater Stockholm and Greater Gothenburg). In Greater Stockholm, as well as the municipalities with fewer than 75 000 inhabitants, rents increased by 1.3 percent. The increase was lowest in Greater Gothenburg (about 1.2%).

Less expensive to live in a smaller municipality
The average monthly rent for an apartment with three rooms and a kitchen is SEK 6 385. Greater municipal areas have higher rents than the smaller municipalities. A household living in a municipality with fewer than 75 000 inhabitants pays around SEK 1 200 less for a three room apartment than a household living in Stockholm.
