National accounts: Monthly GDP indicator, April 2026

Higher GDP in April

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2026-06-10 8.00

Swedish GDP increased by 0.5 percent in April, seasonally adjusted and compared with the previous month, as shown by the preliminary compilation of the GDP indicator. Calendar adjusted GDP was 2.4 percent higher than in the corresponding month of the preceding year.

The GDP indicator provides an early picture of the development of the gross domestic product, GDP. It is compiled on a monthly and quarterly basis with more limited and preliminary statistics than the regular quarterly national accounts. The monthly version of the indicator lies outside the official statistics and is classified as statistics under construction.

“The Swedish economy saw continued growth in April, although at a somewhat more modest pace compared to the strong figures we saw in March. Growth was relatively broad based with increases in production in general government as well as across both goods and service producing industries, with particularly high growth rates seen for industrial production", says Mattias Kain Wyatt, economist at Statistics Sweden.

Balancing and revisions

In a first step, the GDP indicator calculates two separate GDP figures from the production and use side of the economy. Balancing is then carried out where one side is adjusted downward and the other upward to arrive at a single reconciled result. Before reconciliation, the statistical data in April showed an actual GDP development of 2.0 percent from the use side and a corresponding development of 2.9 percent from the production side, both compared with the corresponding month a year ago. In line with standard balancing procedures, this results in a reconciled actual GDP development of 2.4 percent.

April had the same amount of working days compared to the corresponding month of the preceding year.

In accordance with revision policy for the GDP indicator, only months in the current quarter have been revised, that is, no revisions of previous periods are made in this publication.
