National accounts: Monthly GDP indicator, May 2026
GDP growth continued in May
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2026-07-08 8.00
Sweden’s GDP increased by 0.9 percent in May, seasonally adjusted and compared with the previous month, according to the preliminary compilation of the GDP indicator. Calendar adjusted GDP was 3.9 percent higher than in the corresponding month of the preceding year.
The GDP indicator provides an early picture of the development of the gross domestic product, GDP. It is compiled on a monthly and quarterly basis with more limited and preliminary statistics than the regular quarterly national accounts. The monthly version of the indicator lies outside the official statistics and is classified as statistics under construction.
“With positive figures for May we have now seen three months of continuous growth in the Swedish economy. The main explanation to the uptick this month came from higher production among service producing industries where information and communication showed particularly strong growth figures. Stronger net exports concerning goods, largely explained by a downturn in imports concerning goods, also contributed to overall GDP growth," says Mattias Kain Wyatt, economist at Statistics Sweden.

Balancing and revisions
In a first step, the GDP indicator calculates two separate GDP figures from the production and use side of the economy. Balancing is then carried out where one side is adjusted downward and the other upward to arrive at a single reconciled result. Before reconciliation the statistical data for the latest month showed an actual GDP development of 2.6 percent from the use side and a corresponding development of 1.9 percent from the production side, both compared with the corresponding month a year ago. In line with ordinary balancing procedures, this results in a reconciled actual GDP development of 2.2 percent.
This month had one working day less as the corresponding month last year.
In accordance with revision policy for the GDP indicator, only months in the current quarter have been revised.
