• The costs of transport increased by 1.3 percent in August 2026 compared with July 2026 and were 6.4 percent higher than in August 2025.
• The cost of diesel oil increased by 7.4 percent in August 2026 compared with July 2026 and was 20.1 percent higher than in August 2025.
• The cost of electricity increased by 5.5 percent in August compared with July 2026 but was 1.4 percent lower than in August 2025.

Changes in the last month

The Construction Cost Index for multi-dwelling buildings increased by 0.6 percent between July and August 2026. The contractors’ costs rose by 0.6 percent and the construction clients’ cost rose by 0.8 percent. These two groups account for 82 percent and 18 percent, respectively, of the Construction Cost Index.

Costs in the group ‘transport, fuel and electricity’ increased by 2.6 percent. Within that group, the cost of electricity rose by 5.5 percent and the cost of diesel oil by 7.4 percent. The cost of transports also rose, by 1.3 percent. Contractors’ overhead costs increased by 0.1 percent. Costs of machinery decreased by 0.3 percent, while costs for ‘wages and salaries’ were unchanged between July and August 2026.

Contractors’ costs for building materials increased by 0.9 percent in August 2026. Among the building material groups, the costs of plumbing material rose the most by 4.3 percent. The costs of electric materials and wood products rose by 2.8 and 1.3 percent respectively. The only building materials that fell in price compared to July 2026 were the costs of other building materials and white goods, which fell by 2.7 percent and 0.1 percent respectively. The costs of all other building materials increased by at most 1.0 percent or were unchanged between July and August 2026.

Construction clients’ costs increased by 0.8 percent in August 2026. These costs consist of interest and credit costs, planning costs, and central administration costs. The increase was mainly due to higher interest costs and central administration costs, which rose by 1.8 and 0.3 percent, respectively. ­­­ 

Changes in the last year

The Construction Cost Index for multi-dwelling buildings increased by 3.5 percent between August 2025 and August 2026. Contractors’ costs rose by 3.7 percent, which led to an upward contribution to the Construction Cost Index of 2.9 percentage points. Construction clients’ costs increased by 2.8 percent, which led to an upward contribution to the Construction Cost Index of 0.6 percentage points.

Contractors’ costs for ‘wages and salaries’ and overhead costs both increased, by 2.7 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively. Costs for machinery increased with 0.1 percent between August 2025 and August 2026. The costs for ‘transport, fuel and electricity’ increased by 6.1 percent compared to August 2025. Within this group the costs of diesel oil and of transport increased by 20.1 and 6.4 percent, respectively. The cost of electricity decreased by 1.4 percent.

Contractors’ costs for building materials increased by 4.6 percent between August 2025 and August 2026. Among the building material groups, the costs of floor material rose the most by 9.8 percent. Subsequently, plumbing material and reinforcement steel increased by 7.6 and 6.4 percent, respectively. All other material groups increased by up to 5.8 percent. No building materials had falling costs in August 2026 compared to August 2025.

Construction clients’ costs increased by 2.8 percent. Among the construction clients’ costs, the costs for official employee wages, according to collective agreements increased by 3.7 percent, while the costs for interests increased by 3.1 percent. The remaining costs rose by between 1.6 and 2.8 percent.
