The paper is a methodological review concerning the production of official innovation statistics with the new definition of the statistical unit enterprise (SUE) with focus on complex enterprises. It describes and compares the three methods: consolidation, the representative approach and the representative approach with R&D units. With the use of survey data from the Community Innovation Survey 2020-2022 the three methods are illustrated through aggregated data as well as case studies of large and small complex enterprises. The aim of the paper is to provide reference on how the level of quality can be maintained within official innovation statistics with the implementation of the SUE.
