Artificial intelligence in enterprises 2025

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2025-12-11 8.00

Since 2021, Statistics Sweden has measured the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in enterprises four times via the survey ICT usage in enterprise. During this time, the development of AI has taken great strides and the technology is being identified as a possible new general purpose technology with the potential to lead to major productivity gains in large sections of society, not least in the business sector. The purpose of this report is to shed light on how Swedish enterprises' used AI in 2025 and how it has changed since the beginning of the decade.

In recent years, the use of AI in Swedish enterprises has increased significantly. In the ICT usage in enterprises survey, enterprises are asked to indicate whether they use one or more types of a set of AI technologies. The results show a clear and rapid development. In 2025, 35.0 percent of all enterprises with 10 or more employees stated that they used some type of AI technology. This was an increase of just over 10 percentage points compared to 2024.

The pace of development in AI use among enterprises remains high

The size of an enterprises also has an impact on the extent to which it uses AI. During 2025, 30.8 percent of all small enterprises (10–49 employees) used AI, while the same figure for medium-sized (50–249 employees) and large enterprises (250 and more employees) was 49.6 percent and 71.9 percent, respectively. This is not a new trend and a likely explanation may be that larger companies in many cases have more resources to test and implement new technologies in their operations.

In 2025, 11.1 percent of enterprises considered but decided not to use AI, down from 14.5 percent in 2024. Since 65.0 percent of all enterprises did not use any AI technology in 2025, this means that 57.9 percent of all enterprises neither used nor considered using AI during the year. Among enterprises that considered using AI in 2025, lack of relevant expertise was the most common reason for enterprises choosing not to use AI, with 74.7 percent of enterprises citing this reason.

AI, being a multi-functional tool, has many different use cases. The two most common purposes for enterprises using AI were marketing and sales, followed by business administration or management. Of all enterprises using some form of AI technology, 41.7 percent stated that the purpose was marketing and sales, while 35.0 percent stated business administration or management.
