New registration of cars increased by 107 percent in December

In December 2019, there were 48 365 new registrations of passenger cars, up 106.6 percent compared with December last year, according to the Transport Analysis monthly official statistics on new registrations.
Passenger cars defined as a “klimatbonusbil”, that is, electric, plug-in hybrids and gas cars (natural, bio- and methane gas), accounted for 10.6 percent of new registrations of passenger cars in December. Diesel cars accounted for 29.5 percent of all new passenger car registrations, down 5.4 percent from the corresponding month a year ago. The bonus malus system, introduced on 1 July 2018, affects comparisions with the previous year throughout 2019.
Among new registrations, 47 957 passenger cars were of model year 2017 or later, and 408 were older models. In December, there were 25 727 deregistrations of passenger cars, which means that the total passenger car fleet increased by 22 638 passenger cars.
Among new car registrations, 73 percent were registered by businesses and organisations. Businesses in the car retail trade accounted for 41 percent of total new registrations. Among new registrations of passenger cars by private persons, men accounted for 65 percent and women accounted for 35 percent of registrations.
In December, there were 11 453 new registrations of lorries, up 140.1 percent from the corresponding month a year ago. Among new registrations of lorries, there were 10 794 light lorries with a weight up to 3.5 tonnes, which is an increase of 162.4 percent, and 659 heavy lorries with a weight over 3.5 tonnes, which is an increase of 0.5 percent compared with December 2018.

New registrations of passenger cars between January and December 2019 increased by 0.4 percent compared with last year. There were 117 775 new registrations of diesel cars in total in 2019, a decrease of 14.3 percent compared with the corresponding period in 2018.
Passenger cars that can be powered by electricity (including hybrid electric and plug-in hybrids), ethanol, or gas accounted for 21.8 percent of new registrations between January and December 2019, compared with 14.9 percent in the corresponding period in 2018.

New registrations comprise all vehicles that were entered into the register during the month. These registrations differ from new registrations in BIL Sweden’s reports. BIL Sweden's data only contains data on cars of the latest three model years and cars that are not directly imported.
