Registration of new cars decreased by 11.3 percent in January

In January 2019, 21 117 passenger cars were newly registered, down 11.3 percent from January last year. This, according to Transport Analysis’ monthly official statistics on newly registered vehicles.
Passenger cars defined as a “klimatbonusbil”, that is, electric, plug-in hybrids and gas cars (natural, bio- and methane gas) , accounted for 13 percent of newly registered passenger cars in January. Diesel cars accounted for 38 percent of all new passenger car registrations, which is a decrease of 17.1 percent compared with the same month last year. The Bonus malus system, introduced on 1 July 2018, will affect comparisions with the previous year throughout 2019.
Among newly registered cars, 20 695 were of model year 2017 or later, and 422 were older models. In January, 25 326 passenger cars were deregistered, in which meant that the total passenger car fleet decreased by 4 209 vehicles.
Sixty-nine percent of the cars were registered by businesses and organisations, of which businesses in the car retail trade accounted for 29 percent of total new registrations. Among cars registered by private persons, men accounted for 64 percent and women accounted for 36 percent of registrations.
In January, 3 442 lorries were newly registered, down 22.8 percent compared with the same month last year. Among newly registered lorries, 2 920 were light lorries with a weight up to 3.5 tonnes, which is a decrease of 24.4 percent, and 522 were heavy lorries with a weight over 3.5 tonnes, which is a decrease of 12.4 percent compared with January 2018.

The new registrations of passenger cars during 2019 decreased by 11.3 percent compared with last year. There were 8 113 diesel cars in total registered this year, a decrease of 17.1 percent compared with last year.
Passenger cars that can be powered by electricity (including hybrid electric and plug-in hybrids), ethanol or gas accounted for 19.8 percent of new registrations this year, compared with 14.8 percent in 2018.

New registrations comprise all vehicles that were entered into the register during the month. These registrations differ from new registrations in BIL Sweden’s reports. BIL Sweden's data only contains data on cars of the latest three model years and cars that are not directly imported.
