Sweden's wealth decreased in 2025
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2026-06-17 8.00
Sweden's wealth decreased in 2025 The Swedish National Wealth decreased by SEK 126 billion in 2025 and amounted to SEK 40,086 billion at year-end.
- After a relatively large increase in national wealth in 2024, we saw a slowdown again in 2025. The previous peak recorded in 2024 was mainly due to large increases in the value of financial assets. In 2025, the financial increase in value was significantly lower at the same time as the financial liabilities increased even more. The increase in financial liabilities is mainly related to increased values of foreign-owned shares and fund units," says Gustav Engström Gibbs, economist at Statistics Sweden.
Increased national wealth in 2025
The wealth of non-financial assets, which includes natural resources, inventories and buildings, increased in 2025 from SEK 35,809 billion to SEK 36,302 billion. Wealth in financial assets, which includes shares, deposits and tenant-owned apartments, increased from SEK 96,368 billion to SEK 98,282 billion. The value of outstanding liabilities, which includes corresponding items as financial assets fixed on the liabilities side, increased from SEK 91,964 billion to SEK 94,498 billion.
Since 2010, the National Wealth has increased by 146 percent. The increase is mainly due to financial assets, which increased by 154 percent during the period. Non-financial assets have also increased, by 117 percent. At the same time, total debt has increased by 142 percent during the same period, which has dampened the growth of the National Wealth.
Sweden's wealth is mainly owned by households
The total wealth is mainly owned by households, as they hold approximately 71 percent of the total net wealth, which is an increase of 3 percentage points from the previous year. This is followed by public administration, which owns 22 percent. The corporate sector (reported as financial and non-financial corporations) and households' non-profit organisations own 5 and 3 per cent of total wealth, respectively. The sectoral distribution of total wealth has changed since the beginning of the time series.
At the beginning of the time series and until the beginning of the 90s, wealth was relatively evenly distributed between households, corporations and public administration. During the 1990s, households' share increased drastically at the expense of public administration and companies. Since then, households' share has continued to increase and at the end of 2025, households owned almost three-quarters of total wealth," says Evelina Söderblom, economist at Statistics Sweden.

Household wealth continues to grow faster than income
At the end of 2025, net wealth per capita amounted to 2,673,196. Gross national income (GNI) per capita was SEK 363,760 at the same time.
Households' total wealth has gone from being just over twice as large as annual income in the 80s, to being just over seven times as large as total income in 2025. Thus, the development of wealth can be seen clearly stronger compared to the growth in income since the beginning of the 80s. Broken down by asset class, we also see that this increase is primarily related to an increase in the value of financial assets relative to the share of liabilities in annual income. However, since 2021, we have also seen that the share of non-financial assets in annual income has fallen," says Gustav Engström Gibbs, economist at Statistics Sweden.
Households' total wealth is nearly 7.5 times as high as annual income
